Prepare for another day filled with breathtaking temples! Our journey begins at Banteay Srei, affectionately referred to as the Women’s Temple. This gem captivates visitors with its modest size, remarkable preservation, and intricate carvings that adorn its walls.
Following our visit to Banteay Srei, we’ll head to the Angkor Center for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB), an essential wildlife sanctuary located near the iconic Angkor Wat temples. As a non-profit organization, the ACCB is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned animals, playing a vital role in safeguarding Cambodia's diverse wildlife. Here, you can encounter a variety of species, including primates, birds, reptiles, and mammals. Guided tours provide insights into the center’s conservation initiatives and the significant challenges that wildlife faces in Cambodia. Beyond rescue efforts, the ACCB is also involved in breeding programs for endangered species, helping to sustain genetic diversity and enable reintroduction into their natural habitats. By visiting the ACCB, you not only support their important mission but also deepen your understanding of Cambodia's natural heritage.
On our return journey to Siem Reap, we will make a stop at a small landmine museum, where you’ll learn about Aki Ra, a former child soldier who played a pivotal role in disarming numerous landmines. This museum serves to educate visitors on the critical importance of landmine clearance in Cambodia, where it is estimated that around 5 million landmines remain buried. The impact of these remnants of conflict on the nation’s history and culture is profound. While the museum houses a remarkable collection of landmines, Aki Ra's personal story is even more compelling.
If time and energy permit, you may also wish to explore nearby temples within the Grand Circuit, such as Preah Kahn and Pre Rup.
